Our Mission to Save Lives

The BEACON Suicide Prevention Coalition is dedicated to reducing suicide rates in Atchison, Leavenworth, and Jefferson Counties. By bringing together community partners, families, and individuals, we aim to enhance local resources and support systems. Our mission is to foster awareness, provide education, and implement prevention tools to create a safer, healthier community for all.

The Urgent Need for Action

Rising Mental Health Crises

Last year, nearly 1,500 emergency department visits in our region were related to mental health crises, with one in three involving suicidal thoughts.

Adolescent Vulnerability

Adolescents aged 15–19 accounted for the highest number of visits for suicidal ideation, highlighting a critical need for targeted interventions.

Military Family Risks

Military families in our area face heightened risks due to trauma, frequent relocations, and access to firearms, necessitating focused support and resources.

We offer community trainings like QPR to help individuals recognize and respond to suicide warning signs effectively.

Prevention Tools

Providing free gun locks and medication lock bags to ensure safe storage and reduce access to means of self-harm.

Community Collaboration

Partnering with schools, healthcare providers, law enforcement, and community members to create a supportive network.
